Lakelands Shopping Centre, owned by ISPT, has taken a big step towards promoting mental health and wellbeing within the community by becoming the first shopping centre in Western Australia to collaborate with Act Belong Commit (ABC). The partnership was unveiled during the “Spring into Life” event held on October 7th.
The local initiative is a joint effort between the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS), Lakelands Shopping Centre, ABC, and the City of Mandurah. This partnership highlights the potential of shopping centres to optimise mental wellbeing, by providing opportunities for individuals to connect, socialise, and engage in meaningful activities.
“We believe that a shopping centre is much more than just a place to shop; it can be a community hub. Our partnership with Act Belong Commit reinforces our commitment to support the wellbeing of our community, partners, employees, and retailers,” shared Kathleen Brown, Centre Manager Lakelands Shopping Centre.
Attendees at the event were encouraged to explore the ABC website through a unique QR code featured on promotional resources. Specifically, the Mental Wellbeing Quiz which helps individuals rate their involvement in mentally healthy activities.
In addition, posters and digital displays were installed around the centre to reinforce the core message of the ABC campaign.
“The message of Act Belong Commit is that there are things we can all do that help protect and improve our mental wellbeing such as staying active, staying connected with other people, and finding something meaningful to do in our lives,” said Rodney Glossop, Partnerships Coordinator.
Programs at Lakelands Shopping Centre will also be featured on the ABC Activity Finder. This allows visitors to explore the range of activities hosted at the shopping centre which contributes to positive mental wellbeing.
Expressing enthusiasm for the partnership, Mandurah Mayor Rhys Williams emphasized, “The City of Mandurah knows the importance of providing our local community with opportunities to enhance their mental health and wellbeing through our Public Health and Wellbeing Plan 2020-2023. This collaboration between Lakelands Shopping Centre and Act Belong Commit is an exciting initiative.”
